WASHINGTON (AP) - The Washington Nationals won their ninth straight game when pinch-hitter Anthony Rendon singled home Bryce Harper in the ninth inning last night for a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona has lost five straight and is 5-13 in August.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - On the day the Arizona Cardinals went back to work for the first time since Darnell Dockett went down with a knee injury, the impact of losing the big defensive tackle for the season was softened a bit by the return of safety Tyrann Mathieu and nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu. Mathieu went down in the 13th game of his impressive rookie season a year ago with a torn ACL and LCL. The massive Ta'amu tore an ACL in the season finale at San Francisco.

(AP) - A person close to the situation says Minnesota's Maya Moore has won the WNBA most valuable player award. Phoenix's Diana Taurasi finished second and Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry was third, the person said. It's the first league MVP award for Moore, who led the league in scoring.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Connecticut and Arizona have agreed to play in a home-and-home series starting in the 2017-18 season. The Huskies will travel to Arizona's McKale Center in the first meeting and the Wildcats will play in Storrs in 2018-19. The teams have met five times, most recently in the Elite Eight of the 2011 NCAA tournament.
