Maria Quiban goes 1-on-1 with Nike's new Adapt BB power-lacing basketball shoes

FOX11, Los Angeles - In 1998, Marty McFly traveled into the future. All the way to 2015 to be exact! In 2015 he found the Nike MAG, power-lacing high top sneakers and they became part of a pop culture icon. In the real year 2015, Nike actually released via auction a pair of those Nike MAG shoes, and raised quite a bit of money for the Michael J. Fox foundation, but it wasn't until 2016 that they would release a power-lacing shoe that the public could buy. That was the Adapt BB 1.0 and it was over $700.

Now, in 2018, the high tech shoe has been fully realized in the Nike Adapt BB 2.0. The shoe features those power-laces and a few sensors to ensure they're delivering the right fit at the right times during game play. "We picked basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt intentionally because of the demands that athletes put on their shoes," says Eric Avar, Nike VP Creative Director of Innovation. "During a normal basketball game the athlete's foot changes and the ability to quickly change your fit by loosening your shoe to increase blood flow and then tighten again for performance is a key element that we believe will improve the athlete's experience." The shoes come with an app, FitAdapt, which allows you to tighten the shoes, change the color of the lights on the shoes and more. If you don't have your phone handy, you can also tighten or loosen the shoes via the light/buttons directly on the shoes themselves.

Jordan Rice, Senior Director of Nike's Smart Systems Engineering team took the time to brief Maria Quiban about what exactly the Adapt BB is and how it works. Then we let Elex Michaelson and Gina Sivla's son, Jacob, give them a spin!
