Suspect critically hurt when homeowner opens fire after assault

A man is in extremely critical condition after a homeowner fought back during an assault at a Phoenix home.

Phoenix police say three men arrived at the victim's home near 32nd Avenue and Thunderbird Road at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

When the man living there stepped outside, the suspects attacked him and followed him into the home.

The victim says one of the men was armed with a knife, and tells police he grabbed his own handgun and fired upon the suspects. All three suspects took off.

A spokesperson for Phoenix police says one of the suspects was found nearby with a gunshot wound, and he was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

We're told officers caught up with two of the suspects, including the injured man. All three are described as white men with ages ranging from their 20s to their 40s.

Police are now interviewing the man living at the home to determine if he could face any possible charges.
