Prosecutors to announce update in Johnny Bobbitt GoFundMe investigation

Authorities in Burlington County are expected to provide an update in the case involving a GoFundMe page that was allegedly set up to help a homeless veteran.

The Burlington County Prosecutor says he will announce a major development in the investigation at a press conference at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Back in November of 2017, a homeless man named Johnny Bobbitt was said to have given his last $20 to a young woman named Katie McClure after her car ran out of gas in Philadelphia.

McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico then set up a GoFundMe page to help Bobbitt, raising nearly $400,000 from well-wishers.

Over the summer an attorney for Bobbitt accused the couple if mismanaging a large portion of the donations. A Judge then ordered the couple to transfer the money into an escrow account and hire a forensic accountant to review the financial records within 10 days.

Attorneys for Bobbitt tell FOX 29 they were informed by the defense team after the ruling that the money was gone.

McClure and D'Amico have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or misusing any of the money.

D'Amico has said Bobbitt spent $25,000 in less than two weeks in December on drugs, in addition to paying overdue legal bills and sending money to his family.

The couple also bought Bobbitt a camper with some of the funds and parked it on land McClure's family owns in Florence. But Bobbitt became homeless again after D'Amico told him in June that he had to leave the property.

In September, police raided the couple's home and seized several items, including a used BMW that investigators hauled away on a flatbed truck.

GoFundMe later stepped up and announced they would give Bobbitt the $400,000 that was raised for him themselves.
