1,100 acres burned in Kearny River Fire

A wildfire has burned about 1,100 acres near the town of Kearny, some 85 miles southeast of Phoenix. Some evacuations were lifted as the fire began burning away from the town.

The fire was estimated at 25 acres by early afternoon and burning salt-cedar bushes in the dry Gila River bed in Pinal County. By Thursday, officials said 1,100 acres had burned. Over 300 homes were evacuated on Wednesday, but officials say most of the residents have been allowed back into their homes.

Thick smoke could be seen from several nearby towns. Officials estimated the fire at 15 percent containment by Thursday.

Mark Clark with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office says PCSO and area fire departments are assisting. Over 200 firefighters are on scene or traveling to fight the blaze. A helicopter was seen performing water drops on the fire before sundown.

Arizona State Forestry spokesman Mike Reichling says the Kearny River Fire has damaged two homes, two outbuildings and one vehicle. There are no reports of injuries.

APS says the town of Kearny has set up a cooling station at the elementary school cafeteria for those affected by the fire.

An evacuation center was established by the Red Cross at JFK Elementary School in Superior.

The following areas are still closed to residents: 500 block of Greenwich and Hartford,  100 block of Jamestown,  200 block of Jamestown and Ivanhoe, everything west of the tracks including, the mobile home parks and Stevens mobile home park outside of town.
