Police tried to stop a vehicle that was reportedly listed stolen and involved in a burglary.
The suspect fled and stopped on Knox Road near Hamilton. As officers approached the car, the suspect began shooting at them.
"They came around that corner and they were taking gunfire, they were taking rounds at their patrol car as they came around the corner, and those officers stopped very courageously and returned fire and stopped that suspect," said Sgt. Joe Favazzo.
Officers returned fire hitting the suspect at least once.
"All of a sudden we started hearing like firecrackers, and we said that didn't sound like firecrackers, we heard maybe 10-12 shots... the police were announcing in English and Spanish, put your hands up and get out of the vehicle, and no one came out," said Jim Schmitt.
Paramedics responded and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators are working to determine if the man's fatal wound was inflicted by the police shooting or if the suspect took his own life.
"Extremely fortunate that no one was injured, no one from the community was injured, none of our officers were injured, and a very violent suspect, somebody that is willing basically to pose an ambush on officers," said Favazzo.
