Tractor plunges into pond, trapping a man inside

A man was pulled from a small pond in the west valley after the tractor he was riding in rolled off the edge and right into the water. FOX 10's Nicole Garcia reports. 1/2/15
A tractor plunged into a pond in Surprise, leaving a farm worker trapped underwater.

This happened near the Loop 303 and Peoria Avenue on Friday.

Fire officials say the worker was driving the tractor when it got too close to the edge of the pond.  The tractor flipped over and landed upside down in the pond, leaving the man trapped in the cab.

Other workers nearby ran over to help.

"Fortunately for us, the workers here had rigged a second tractor up to the wheels that were exposed out of the water and lifted it high enough to where our guys were able to get a ladder onto the cab of the tractor and break the window and remove the driver from the tractor at that point," explained Autry Cheatum of the Surprise Fire Department.

The man was unconscious when crews pulled him out.  He had been under water for several minutes.

He was transported to an area hospital in extremely critical condition.
