Spare Parts premier at Tempe Marketplace

Tuesday night's premier was packed with movie-goers eager to see the film; it's based on the real life story of a local high school robotics team who managed to win a national underwater robotics championship, with just a few hundred dollars and a lot of tenacity.

Tempe Marketplace rolled out the red carpet tonight for the world premier of "Spare Parts," the story of 4 local Hispanic students in the country illegally who beat the odds.

"It's my most dramatic part yet, I'm kind of happy with the way things turned out, I love these guys you know, I love the real kids, and I love the actors that were in it," said comedian George Lopez.

In the film Lopez plays the robotics team coach, leading the rag tag team to the 2004 victory over MIT. Marissa Tomei and Jamie Lee Curtis also star in the film alongside up and comers like Carlos and Alexa Pena Vega.

"The way America is moving now and being more diverse with our culture, and opportunities are opening up for these young Hispanic kids, I feel like this movie is just going to be an extra motivator," said Alexa Pena Vega.

The movie was inspired by students from Phoenix's own Carl Hayden High School. Several of the original robotics team members attended Tuesday's premiere.

"When they enter our program and when they see this movie we want then to see that they could be their own success, that could be them in that movie, they can find their own goals and they can win," said Cristian Arcega.

Everyone that was walking the carpet tonight had a similar hope that the film will inspire and make you think, no matter your age or background.

"It's very emotional these days you know, like them they had something that they accomplished, for us to make this movie after 10 years of trying to do it is inspiring man," said Lopez.

Tuesday's premier is a fundraiser for a new endowment that will support science, technology, engineering, arts, and math for Phoenix Union High School students.

The movie opens in theaters for the public next Friday, January 16th.
