Sheriff's memorial fund gives $25k to fallen officers family

Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office made a donation to the family of a fallen Navajo Police Officer.

The Sheriff's memorial fund gave a $25,000 check to the family of Officer Ernest Montoya. Montoya suffered a fatal heart attack while taking a prisoner to jail.

Montoya had worked with the Navajo Police Department for 19 years.

"Sheriff Joe Arpaio says, "I am proud that our Memorial Fund is able to provide money for the families of both injured and fallen officers and deputies, in order to take at least some of the burden from their lives at this most painful time."

The fund over the past 2 years has raised and given out $379,000 to 15 families of injured and fallen police officers and sheriff's deputies across Arizona. It makes it one of the largest benefactors of law enforcement in the state.
