Fresh food on the fly: QT kitchens open across valley

When you think of gas station food, you think images of hours-old hot dogs rolling the warmer, luke-warm nacho cheese, and unappealing ham sandwiches wrapped in cellophane may come to mind.

But one gas station chain has been trying to up the game. Over the past year, Quik Trip has changed its menu, offering an expanded menu.

They're even offering gourmet items and tonight we meet the Quick Trip chef behind the food.

"We actually are making food for you on site, just for you to order... we sell a lot of pizza," said Chef Nick Powell.

QT isn't just selling pizza, they also offer mixed drinks, pretzels, Philly cheesesteak flat bread sandwiches, and even grilled cheese with bacon like mom used to make.

"It's made to order the way you want it, and I think the biggest thing is the freshness, and it's cooked with love, let's not forget that," said QT Vice President Chuck Barton.

The QT near Cave Creek and the 101 opens at 2 a.m. Thursday morning. QuikTrip has opened about 100 of the kitchens across the valley.

The QT kitchens are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
