Phoenix police nab man wanted for 2014 murder

Phoenix police have finally made an arrest following a homicide that occurred in June 2014.

Someone called 9-1-1 to report shots fired in the 4500 block of East Southgate Avenue on June 4, 2014. When officers responded, they discovered that 23-year-old Jonas Asefaw had been killed, according to Sgt. Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Department.

Witnesses reported seeing two black males running from the scene after the shooting, but more tips were slow to trickle in to detectives because of possible gang activity, Crump said.

As detectives began investigating the recent homicide of Brianna Wells, detectives received new information about Asefaw's murder.

This new information led detectives to 27-year-old Sammy Graham, according to Crump.

Graham was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, one count of a weapons violation and charges stemming from an outstanding felony warrant, Crump said.

Police do not believe Graham was involved in the Wells murder. However, detectives believe there are additional witnesses in this case and are asking anyone with information about Sammy Graham to contact the Phoenix Police Department's Violent Crimes Bureau at (602) 262-6141. For people who wish to remain anonymous, they can contact Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS.
