Caught on camera: Thief breaks into cars in Anthem neighborhood

Surveillance cameras captured a brazen thief targeting a valley neighborhood. The suspect reportedly stole a number of items, including weapons, out of unlocked cars.

Several residents woke up to find their cars trashed and items missing on Webster Court in Anthem Sunday morning. Now one victim hopes her surveillance system helps identify the suspect.

In the grainy surveillance video, you can see a man walking alone when security lights come on. In the video, he continues up to the driveway.

"I think it's some teenage kid looking for some cash," said the resident who showed us her surveillance video, but prefers we not reveal her identity.

The home surveillance cameras show the thief checking for unlocked car doors. He found one, sat inside for at least five minutes and took two hunting knives left inside.

"You think it's Anthem, a safe little quiet community, but it's not. We normally keep our cars locked, and this was the one time they got us," the resident said.

The video shows the thief taking about 20 minutes to break into cars in the neighborhood, before he targeted one home. He walked all the way into the courtyard while the family slept inside.

"We woke up, and I went to go move my car and when I opened the door everything was shifted around, the seats pushed forward, papers everywhere," said the resident.

At other homes in the neighborhood, it was the same scene. Residents woke up to their cars ransacked. One neighbor had a backpack missing.

"The backpack he was wearing was actually our neighbor's backpack," said the resident.

She is hoping the video is enough for someone to help identify the thief.

"Hopefully, we catch you soon, because there are a lot of people out there with cameras as well as us. We'll catch your face next time," she said.

The suspect eventually took off on a bicycle. If you have any information, you're asked to call the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
