Gun store holding raffle to benefit Avondale Officer

A valley gun shop is raising money for an injured Avondale Police Officer, it's raffling off an AR-15 rifle.

The rifle is worth nearly $2,000 and it's being used to raise funds for the injured officer.

AZFirearms.com is selling $10 tickets with the proceeds going to Officer Mike McGhee. "We had something that had a lot of bang for its buck and we wanted to help him out," said Danny Todd.

McGhee was huret last October after a suspect behind the wheel of a stolen truck rammed into his patrol car crushing him. Todd said the money will go to McGhee and his young family, to help them get through this tough recovery time.

"He is only taking the proceeds he needs to get caught up, the rest he's giving to the 100 club to help other law enforcment people," said Todd.

The drawing will be held on Valentines Day, but that doesn't mean the winner will go home with the rifle that day, they have to still pass the proper background checks. Those with criminal records including substance abuse, felony warrants, and domestic violence will not get the rifle, even if they win.

"I will sell a raffle ticket to anyone who walks in the door, we will not transfer a gun unless that person can qualify for the gun," he said.

The fundraiser has been popular among the shops regular customers. Todd said they've sold nearly 500 tickets since December.

"A lot of the law enforcement people are stepping up, and a lot of the public. There's a lot of support for this.

They're hoping to sell 1,000 tickets and raise $10,000 and so far they're halfway there.
