Police pursuit ends in crash near I-17 exit ramp

A police pursuit ended in a crash near the Interstate 17 exit ramp and Thomas Road on Sunday night.

I-17 overpass and the I-17 southbound ramp on Thomas were shut down for almost eight hours.

DPS says they tried to stop an erratic driver on the I-17 and Glendale, but the driver kept going.

The driver eventually got off at Camelback, but eventually returned to the freeway, hitting speeds of over 100 miles per hour.

According to DPS, the car exited at Thomas, drove through a red light and hit another car.

"As the vehicle exited here at Thomas Road, our officers were in the process of disengaging the lights, the suspect vehicle ran the light here at thomas road, where it collided with an innocent victim," said DPS Capt. Daniel Golden.

The erratic driver was ejected from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The other driver was also taken to the hospital in serious condition.

It's unclear at this point if impairment was a factor.

Arizona Department of Transportation says both the Indian School Road and Thomas Road exit ramps have reopened.
