PD: Officer, woman stabbed, suspect shot during altercation

A bizarre story unfolded just east of downtown Phoenix Wednesday morning.

A fight led to a man pulling a knife on a woman, and then he attacked a police officer causing that officer to open fire. And then it turns out the suspect is believed to have killed another man yesterday.

All of this happened just before 8 a.m. at 16th Street and Van Buren in the middle of the street.

Witnesses saw two men on the ground with serious injuries, one of them an officer, and the other a suspect who police say stabbed the officer.

The chaotic and frightening scene took place during rush hour traffic. Investigators have been on the scene all day.

Police say the suspect stabbed his ex-girlfriend and the officer before that officer opened fire twice.

Witness video shows a group of officers struggling with the suspect. Investigators say the officer shot twice during a dramatic confrontation in the middle of the street.

"This one guy has a knife and was trying stab this lady, this Mexican lady, and the officer showed up and told him to put the knife down and he didn't listen," said witness Clay Jackson.

Detectives say the man dragged a woman into traffic near 16th Street and Van Buren and then stabbed her in the chest.

That is when the officer shot the man, but investigators say the suspect didn't stop, he lunged at the officer and stabbed him. The officer shot the man a second time.

"He was still resisting arrest, jumping around on the ground, and they tasered him and he was still resisting arrest," said Jackson.

Investigators say it turns out the man is also wanted for murder, suspected of stabbing a 29-year-old man to death the night before at a nearby apartment complex. The officer and the female victim are expected to survive.

"I think his actions out here this morning are going to be very heroic, and what he did and probably saving this female's life out here, and certainly putting his own life at risk," said Sgt. Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Department.

We're told the suspect is in surgery and is facing multiple charges. No names have been released.
