Barry Goldwater High School evacuated while police check out backpack

Students and staff at a north Phoenix high school spent about two hours in the stands of the school's football stadium while the Police Department's bomb squad was summoned to check out a suspicious backpack.

Sgt. Trent Crump said the backpack found Monday morning in a bathroom at Barry Goldwater High School near 27th Avenue and Rose Garden Lane was found to contain books.

Deer Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Monica Allread said the school has an enrollment of nearly 1,800.
