No charges pending after 2-year-old boy shoots self in face

A 2-year-old boy is recovering after police say he accidentally shot himself in the face at a home near 83rd Avenue and Cholla.

The shooting occurred Thursday night while the boy and a 7-year-old brother were being watched by a grandmother and aunt.

The aunt was washing dishes in the kitchen when the gun went off, according to an audio recording from a 911 call released by police.

"My baby nephew got shot in the face with a gun, can you please send help," said the caller.

"How old is the child?" asked a dispatcher.

"The baby is two years old," said the caller.

The 9-1-1 call was made last night after 2-year-old Christian Zeschitz-Garrison accidentally shot himself in the face with his dad's gun.

"Who did it?" asked the dispatcher.

"He did it; the child got the gun himself, yes," said the caller.

"He's going to be doing better; they said he's coming to, and that he should be responsive and all right," said Jacob Harvey, a family friend.

Jacob Harvey is a friend of the family; he says Christian's grandmother and Aunt were babysitting him when the shooting happened last night. Police believe the 2-year-old was playing on the bed in the master bedroom when he found the handgun rolled up in some sheets. Christian's dad wasn't home at the time.

"He's heartbroken, he just wants everyone to say prayers to make sure his boy is okay," said Harvey.

In the picture the family released, Christian is wearing a shirt that says "I have the coolest dad ever."

"That's his favorite shirt; he loves his dad," he said.

"He loves his son, both his boys are his world, he'll put his own life on the line to make sure they're okay, a comment he made is he wish it was him and not his son," said Harvey.

The family is cooperating with the investigation, police say there have been no charges filed.

Under Arizona state law, incidents where a child is put in a situation that could cause injury or death can result in child abuse charges.
