DPS arrests man for criminal speed on SR51

The Arizona Department of Public Safety caught a man they say was driving 131 miles per hour Sunday.

But only after he crashed his 2014 Ford Mustang into another driver's car on State Route 51.

Officers arrested 22-year-old Alejandro Barraza for criminal speed after the accident.

It all started with a DPS airplane tracked Barraza at high speeds.

The crew radioed to a motorcycle unit on the ground who tried to catch up to Barraza. That's when Barraza allegedly slammed on his brakes to make the motorcycle officer fly past him.

He then tried to cut across several lanes of traffic before colliding with a Honda Accord.

According to DPS, Barraza told officers he's glad they did not catch him while he was driving 160 miles per hour earlier.

Barraza was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on charges of reckless driving, criminal speed, failure to show driver's license or ID, and endangerment.
