74-year-old mother airlifted off mountain after 20-foot fall

A 75-year-old woman on a hike with her daughters for Mother's Day was taken to the hospital after a twenty-foot fall, Scottsdale Fire crews say.

Capt. Dan Ables of Scottsdale Fire Department says crews responded to Sunrise Trail near Shea and 145th Way on Sunday morning after receiving a report of an injured hiker.  The 74-year-old mother was out hiking on Mother's Day with her two daughters when the woman reportedly fell about twenty feet.  Because of the rough terrain, crews performed a technical rescue using a helicopter.  The 75-year-old was carefully hoisted off the trail and was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment, according to Scottsdale Fire.

Firefighters point out that it's important to bring someone with you when hiking or notify someone of where you will be.  They also stressed the importance of bringing water, appropriate shoes, a hat, cell phone and sunscreen.
