Jerome cracks down on short-term rentals

It's a popular trend: renting out your home for a week or a weekend, using websites like Airbnb, but one Arizona city says enough and they're cracking down on people using their homes as short-term rentals.

If you're looking to spend the weekend in Jerome this summer, you'll have to find a hotel.  The town says weekend home rentals aren't allowed.

In this friendly town with breathtaking views, a legal battle is brewing between some property owners.

The town's position is that short-term rentals are and always have been prohibited by Jerome's zoning ordinance.  Now the town is cracking down.  Property owners who bought historic homes and spent thousands to fix them up and rent them out for the weekend have been told they're not allowed to do so.

Some residents support the town's decision.

"It can get a little rowdy here on the weekends sometimes," said Cody Burkett.

But some property owners are angry and threatening to sue and businesses are also concerned it could hurt them.

"Every weekend, at least four to six weeks ahead of time, we book up, so when people come up here, they want to stay up here," said Katrine Kindts, a hotel employee.

The Pink Lady is one of those historic short-term rental homes.  James A. Rome, an artist, lives next door to it.

"Experience has been perfect.  People are always very cordial.  They ask a lot of questions about Jerome," he said.

Rome says he's never had a problem with visitors staying the weekend in Jerome.  He sells his artwork in town and most of his customers are tourists.

"When they leave and go home, this will be one of the places they talk about," he said.

Property owners battling the town will have a hearing in July.  No date and time have been set yet.
