Arizona mother who left kids in hot car sentenced to 18 years of probation

Her mugshot sparked an outpouring of support as donations came in from all over the world.

Shanesha Taylor pleaded guilty to child abuse after leaving her two kids in a hot car during a job interview last year.

Now a judge has sentenced her to 18 years of supervised probation. That sentence is designed to end when the youngest of her four children, a newborn, turns 18-years-old.

Walking out of the court this morning and moving on after more than a year, Shanesha Taylor had this to say to everyone who donated.

"Thank you for your support, thank you for being with me through this," said Shanesha Taylor.

Taylor didn't personally ask the judge for leniency, instead letting her attorney argue for a lesser sentence, ten years probation.

"Your honor, she is remorseful, she is very remorseful, and I think you will not see her in the courts again," said Valerie Llewellyn.

It was in the low 80's the day Taylor went to her Scottsdale job interview in March of 2014.

Police say she left her 2-year-old and 8-month-old in the car for about 45 minutes. The temperature inside was over 100 degrees.

"She used poor judgement; she knows that, we all know that, but she did for a reason she thought was compelling, she needed to get that job that day," said Llewellyn.

Taylor's tearful mugshot garnered her nearly $114,000 in online donations. At one point the County Attorney offered her a deal, if she put half the money in trust funds for her kids they would not prosecute her.

"We know that we were able to get her a deal of a lifetime, a deal that would have allowed her to have no probation, no felony on her record, this is a deal that is very rare and hardly anybody gets," said Benjamin Taylor, her former attorney.

For reasons, we still don't know Taylor did not follow through with that deal. In court, the prosecutor told the judge that Taylor hadn't been honest with them about her financial situation.
