Senior trip canceled: school says no to trip to LA but students go anyway

Some graduating Seniors at a valley charter school went on a trip to Magic Mountain Amusement Park in California.

The school is not happy about it; that is because they told the kids not to go, and they went anyway.

The trip was organized by a teacher who has either been fired or resigned under fire, depending on who you talk to.

The school is Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center Charter School in Avondale.

Of some 92 Seniors at the school, only 38 were at the school Monday. Another 16 called in sick, and 38 went on the trip with former math teacher Rolando Robles.

The school says the teacher took the kids without the school's permission.

They're riding the roller coasters at Six Flags in Los Angeles. School administrators say the students and Mr. Robles left on a bus Monday morning.

The plan is to stay at the park all day and return late Monday night.

"The students were going to do a field trip Friday after graduation, but some students complained to sponsor, and then it was arbitrarily moved to a day with school and that was an issue," said Dr. William Conley.

Administrators say they told Mr. Robles no field trips for fun are allowed on school days, and they wouldn't let him use money students had given to the school for the trip.

Students say the teacher paid with his own money to take the kids to Los Angeles.

"I just got filled in today, because the teacher I was supposed to have a final with got fired, he was trying to take the kids on their senior trip anyways when the district canceled it," said Hunter Urquides.

Students think the school administrators are being unreasonable.

"I don't think the senior trip is fair with what's going on, but I feel the seniors deserve a senior trip along with other seniors," said Jayden Carrife.

The Assistant Superintendent said he can't talk about Mr. Robles for legal reasons, but he promises to refund money students sent to the school for the trip.

"Students are going to get their money back, we're in the process of getting money, we will write checks as soon as possible, we will write them the check," said Dr. Conley.
