Mesa Police hold DUI checkpoint near Salt River

The City of Mesa held a DUI checkpoint and saturation patrols to try and curb impaired driving.

The checkpoint was held on Power Road near Thomas.

Officers staffed the checkpoint from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.

Authorities selected this location due to a high number of impaired drivers who use the route to travel to/from some of the county lakes and river areas.

The checkpoints are also enforcing liquor laws, specifically persons under 21 who consume alcohol.

Staffing is paid for by grant money received from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
