Tom Ryff's last day is scheduled to be on Dec. 1.
It will mark the end of his 36-year career with the Tempe Police Department.
He's been chief since 2006.
The 55-year-old Ryff started his Tempe police career in 1979 and has held a number of positions in various areas throughout the department including sergeant, lieutenant, commander and assistant chief.
City officials say they plan to appoint an interim chief in December before launching a search for a permanent replacement.
