18-year-old Ebin 'Kumar' Proctor was shot and killed last week by a YCSO deputy following a routine traffic stop.
Officials say the teen took off running and then assaulted a deputy before he was shot and killed.
His friends gathered in front of the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde to protest the shooting and say they are skeptical of the story.
YCSO officials say the deputy feared for his life, and that is why he opened fire.
Proctor's friends dispute that, saying he was a good person who did not like violence.
"We're trying to get answers, we want answers, we need answers, nobody's life should be taken, especially this young," said a protester.
The friends held a car wash Sunday, hoping to raise $1,000 for Proctor's family.
The Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting.
