He's running for the Republican nomination for President.
He even has a spiffy website: www.donaldjtrump.com, and a logo, which is simply "TRUMP" in bold letters. Subtlety is not this man's strong suit. Trump says he is uniquely qualified to make America great again because he's rich. Um, okay. Now The Donald is headed to campaign rallies in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
So, are we to take this guy seriously? I say yes, and here's why. Trump will likely make it into the top tier of GOP candidates in national polls and get on the stage for the ten-candidate Republican debate in Cleveland on August 6th. He's a loose cannon who can and will say anything to anybody. A sharp verbal jab at a rival just might stick.
Trump can also find support by tapping into a rich vein of resentment: ordinary people feel the game is rigged, they're working hard and not making good money. Who better than a real estate mogul to remind them of their declining prospects? Sounds crazy, but folks listen to Trump and kind of like him. Maybe not enough to put him in the White House, but enough to turn the Republican campaign season into a reality TV show.
