$500 million Powerball jackpot up for grabs

To buy, or not to buy, that is the question and time is running out to get a Powerball ticket for Wednesday's drawing.

The jackpot is now $500 million dollars and climbing.

The cut-off to buy a ticket is at 7:59 Wednesday evening. The odds of winning are long, but that is not stopping people from playing.

"We're here to purchase the winning ticket," said Abel Penaloza.

The Arizona Lottery Headquarters near University and 44th Street was buzzing. It's one of the places where you can buy a ticket for the 500 million dollar Powerball jackpot.

"Our players are really excited, we had long lines here at lunchtime, I've always talked to others out in the field and our stores are really busy," said Karen Bach with the Arizona Lottery.

It's the 3rd highest jackpot in history, and some like to buy their tickets specifically from the lottery headquarters.

"I think there is a great vibe here with all the winners. Hopefully there is something in the air," said Sara Grafton.

"This lovely lady sold me a $10,000 ticket one time, so I come back, she's my lucky lady," said Andrea Terauchi.

The nation's biggest jackpot was in 2013, it was a 590 million dollar prize, the second biggest jackpot was in 2012 at 587 million, and a Phoenix man won part of that.

Regardless of who wins the State of Arizona is already a winner, it's one of the 44 states that count on lottery revenue.

"A lot of our players don't realize that every week nearly 3.4 million dollars goes towards important state programs and services all right here in Arizona," said Bach.

So what will these ticket holder's FOX 10 spoke to do with their winnings?

"We've already got plans for it, probably try not to gamble it back," said Penaloza.

"I would quickly get a team together; a lawyer, a CPA, not tell anyone, get it set up and ready to take care of my loved ones," said Terauchi.
