9-week-old suffers brain injury; father faces child abuse charge

A father is in jail after investigators say he caused a traumatic brain injury to his 9-week-old baby.

Doctors say she had skull fractures and broken ribs.

Now friends are trying to raise money for the baby's mother who had to quit her job to care for the child full-time.

The mother was at work when the injury allegedly happened.  We spoke with her best friend on Monday who says they're not sure of the extent of the baby's brain damage.  They say the mother was a receptionist and bread-winner of the family.  Now she has to leave her job to care for the child and two other children.

"She's finally made it home, but she does have a feeding tube," said Wendy Paez.

9-week-old Serenity is home after being in the hospital for two weeks; recovering from two broken ribs and multiple skull fractures.  Doctors didn't think she'd survive.

"You definitely can see the differences.  When you used to talk to her, she used to giggle and make eye contact... a little bit of that is gone," said Paez.

The baby's father, Baudel Alejandro Bermudez, is facing child abuse charges.  He told police the baby fell off the couch when he was in another room, then slipped out of his hands during a bath and hit her head. But doctors say the baby's injuries far exceed that.

"We definitely don't believe this is an accident.  The detective's report is pretty clear.  The individual in jail is the person responsible," said Paez.

Police say at the time of the injury, the baby's mother, Rebecca, was at work.  Since she quit to take care of her baby full-time, Paez and others started a GoFundMe account for medical bills and other expenses.

"Rebecca is the sole provider of her three children under the ages of 4 and she's going to have to quit her job to take care of Serenity.  She's going to be her sole provider and care taker," said Paez.

Their goal is to raise $20,000.

"We were devastated and we had a lot of hope and we still do have a lot of hope.  It's just heartbreaking that this could happen, especially to someone that you love," said Paez.

Bermudez is still in jail.

Rebecca is planning on selling her home.

Paez says they'll probably need to raise more than $20,000, but it's a start.
