App allows drivers to pay for parking meters

Digging through your pockets for change may soon be a thing of the past. If you need to pay the parking meter, now there's an app for that.

"We finally heard you, all of you have been asking for this, and we finally got it," said Councilman Michael Nowakowski.

The City of Phoenix has unveiled a new app that lets you pay for the parking meter by using your phone.

"Your ability to park downtown shouldn't be based on whether you were lucky to find a few quarters in your cushion," said Mayor Greg Stanton.

The pay by phone all is called Pango, it lets you add more time to your meter from any location.

"I know when we were swearing in the new council members that half my family had to leave before I spoke so they could feed the meters, no more," said Kate Gallegos.

No more searching for where you parked either, the Pango App keeps track of where you left your vehicle.

"When you signup for it, it's really simple. It's your name, your license plate, and a phone number," said Neil Edwards with Pango.

After signing up on the Pango website and adding your credit card information you download the app. Then to use it you would enter the meter number, type in how much time you need, and after sending you a confirmation text message the meter activates in 20 seconds.

It's a perfect solution if you're running late. The hours for parking meter enforcement got extended in downtown Phoenix last year. So it's all the more important to have a way to pay.

"We're doing everything we can to use these smartphones so many of us have now to make our lives easier, and to do a better job of providing city services," said Councilman Bill Gates.

Pango charges an extra 7 cents for the transaction. The app lets you park up to four hours.

Down the road, there may be a way for shops offering validation as well.

Pango is offering 1 hour of free parking for the first 5,000 people who sign up. The company is also donating a dollar to homeless veterans for every time the app is downloaded for the rest of February.
