Marana police: Officer fatally shoots armed man

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) - A 56-year-old man is dead after being shot by a Marana police officer.

Police say Daniel Lawrence Caldwell died at a hospital Monday after Officer Cesar Nelson shot Caldwell as he raised a gun in the direction of the officer.

According to Sgt. Jose Alvarez, the shooting took place during an early morning confrontation in a restaurant parking lot as Nelson got out of his police vehicle and Caldwell walked up holding a gun.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department had sought help from Marana police in locating Caldwell after he reportedly fired a gun while arguing with his girlfriend.
