Northern Arizona University to consider increasing tuition

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Funding cuts included in the next state budget approved by the Arizona Legislature over the weekend has Northern Arizona University officials considering a tuition increase for new students.

The Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff reports that NAU will receive $17.3 million less in state funding in the next fiscal year.

NAU Vice President Bjorn Flugstad had said in February that a smaller funding decrease proposed by Gov. Doug Ducey would likely trigger a tuition increase for incoming freshman of up to 3.5 percent.

NAU Public Affairs Director Tom Bauer said the university now will have to reevaluate where it stands under an even larger decrease.

Current students would continue to pay the same tuition rates they paid as freshmen thanks to NAU's Pledge program.
