PHOENIX (AP) - The City of Mesa has begun construction on a new fire station.
The new station will replace an existing fire station located near Alma School and Broadway roads. City officials say the older station no longer adequately serves the needs of the community.
City officials broke ground on the fire station during a ceremony held Wednesday.
The city raised about $4 million to build the station with money from a 2013 public safety bond approved by Mesa voters. The new station is about 12,000 square feet and includes three bays, 10 dormitory rooms, one training and community room and a fuel station.
Officials say the station is scheduled for completion in June 2016.
