Ex-Fiesta Bowl boss completes eight-month prison sentence

PHOENIX (AP) - A former chief executive of the Fiesta Bowl has been released from federal prison after serving an eight-month sentence for his acknowledged participation in an illegal campaign contribution scheme.

Former bowl leader John Junker started serving his sentence in mid-June and completed it on Feb. 11.

He had pleaded guilty plea in the scheme in which bowl employees made illegal contributions to politicians and were reimbursed by the nonprofit bowl.

The judge had said Junker had led an otherwise productive life, but still asked employees to make illegal contributions.

The scandal exposed lavish spending and perks that the Fiesta Bowl heaped on lawmakers and employees, but the investigation ended without any criminal charges being filed over those perks.
