Flagstaff-area highway partially reopened at sinkhole site

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A three-mile stretch of a scenic northern Arizona highway has partially reopened after being closed due to a sinkhole in the roadway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation closed State Route 89A in both directions at the Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks about 15 miles south of Flagstaff after the sinkhole was observed Saturday.

Crews on Monday used heavy equipment to remove loose material beneath the pavement. They then filled the void with a liquid concrete-cement mix. Workers then had to wait for the mixture to dry before repaving the roadway.

ADOT says it reopened one of the two lanes Tuesday. Both directions of traffic will be guided through the area with assistance from a flagger until the second lane is reopened.
