Funeral for Phoenix firefighter killed in crash to be public

PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix Fire Department has announced funeral services for a firefighter killed in a single-vehicle crash.

Phoenix Fire spokeswoman Michelle Miller said Wednesday a service for 43-year-old Matt Hiatt will take place Tuesday at Christ's Church of the Valley.

It will be open to the public.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says Hiatt was off-duty and traveling eastbound on the Loop 202 San Tan Freeway on Feb. 20 when his vehicle crashed.

The cause is still under investigation.

Hiatt, who lived in Gilbert, is the son of a retired Phoenix fire engineer.

His death marks the third loss for the department in a month.

Fire Capt. Ray Mercado died Feb. 5 of natural causes and dispatcher Megan Lange was killed Jan. 29 in a wrong-way crash.
