Woman pleads not guilty in fatal 2014 Gilbert freeway crash

PHOENIX (AP) - A woman has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a 2014 wrong-way crash on a Gilbert freeway that killed two people.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 68-year-old Patricia Murphy pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two felony second-degree murder charges and seven felony endangerment charges.

Murphy remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.

She was severely injured in the May 18, 2014 crash and appeared in court in a wheelchair.

Murphy is accused of driving the wrong way on Loop 202 for more than 10 miles before her car collided head-on with another vehicle.

Killed in the crash was a Mesa couple, 25-year-old Michael Ruquet and 20-year-old Ashley Adea.

Court records show Murphy's blood-alcohol content was 0.18 percent. A driver is presumed to be legally drunk in Arizona at 0.08 percent.
