SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ)
A Scottsdale woman is recovering after thousands of bees attacked her and the family pets.
Scottsdale Fire Department and exterminators responded to the scene on 78th Street on Sunday evening.
One woman, three dogs and five cats were attacked by more than 50,000 bees today. Even though the victim survived the attack, some four-legged members of the family sadly did not.
"She couldn't get away from them, and they told us that her dog was covered, covered with bees, more than 100 bees."
Natalie Bendtsen was at work when her coworker Caroline's panicked mother called and said she and the family pets had been attacked by thousands of bees.
“Ah there was about 50,000 on the second story, right in the little hallow spot, we busted it open, there was just more and more," said Pest Exterminator RJ Riedlinger.
Thankfully Caroline's mother escaped with just some stings, but others weren't so lucky.
"The three dogs got rushed to the emergency care, and by the time she got there one of them had already died, and then her dog died as well and one dog is now okay," said Bendtsen.
Right now it's still not clear what caused the attack.
"We call them aggressive bees... they just - could have been anything, but it's that they build up and they were nesting on the outside of the apartment or the patio home and they came in through the attic.”
Exterminators say it's a good idea to have professionals check for hives regularly - and if you encounter them, act quickly.
"Be careful, don’t swat at them, just try to run away," said Riedlinger.
The woman attacked is stable, but will be kept in the hospital overnight as a precaution.
Now the family needs help to pay vet bills for the three dogs, if you would like to help visit: https://www.gofundme.com/rztzyv49
