PHOENIX (KSAZ) - With all the high profile visits from politicians running for President, you can expect beefed up security. Law enforcement will be out in full force keeping supporters safe, and protesters in line.
Federal, state, county, and local law enforcement plan to be on alert and doing a lot more than crowd control. In addition to unruly protesters, officers will also be on the lookout for potential terrorist threats.
"It puts a unique strain on law enforcement because all of the candidates coming into town all at once... so many motorcade routes have to be planned, so many types of contingencies that have to be planned," said former Secret Service agent Tim Franklin.
One of the largest events will be Donald Trump's rally in Fountain Hills. Almost 20,000 people are expected to attend including Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. MCSO will be stepping up security at the vast outdoor venue with eyes in the sky and on the ground.
"We have helicopters, we have armed posse I will bring out if necessary... and there's rumors there will be demonstrators. So my message to anyone in that town, if you don't behave yourself, you're going to tent city," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
In addition to the crowds The Secret Service and Valley law enforcement will be on alert for potential terrorist activities, especially in the wake of the dramatic raid and shootout resulting in the arrest of a Paris Terror Attacks suspect.
"Now because of Brussels, because of San Bernardino, because of all these new factors, they are going to be relying on national intelligence, and local intelligence who may have knowledge of events that could unfold while these candidates are here in Arizona," said Franklin.
Security for the candidates is provided by the Secret Service, Phoenix Police, and MCSO will provide security for public areas in downtown Phoenix and Fountain Hills respectively. Phoenix Police say they will monitor the events closely and will staff each event accordingly.
