6-year-old burned after Christmas tree catches fire

Firefighters say a 6-year-old girl was burned after a Christmas tree caught fire in and quickly spread throughout a Phoenix home.

The Phoenix Fire Department says the fire broke out at a home near 17th Avenue and North Lane on Monday morning when a candle tipped over and ignited a dry Christmas tree. The blaze quickly spread throughout the home and the girl suffered to her hands and other parts of her body.

One other child and three adults were also inside the home, but they escaped without injury.

According to fire officials, the girl, identified as Anna, was burned while trying to put out the fire. Little Anna is in stable condition, at Maricopa Integrated Health System's Burn Unit.

"Had some first and second degree burns to her hands and her feet," said Captain Reda Bigler with Phoenix Fire Department.

That is the glimmer of "good news" for a family that was already devastated before the fire on Monday morning. The candle that was burning inside Anna's home was part of a memorial to the children's father, who died a month ago from a heart condition.

According to fire officials, Anna's mother was at work Monday when Anna and her little brother were playing. That's when Anna's little brother reportedly placed a paper over the candle, catching it on fire.

"I heard my nephew and niece screaming, 'the house is on fire'," said Alberto Cruz, who are the children's uncle. Cruz said the fire was so intense, he panicked when he couldn't get the children out the front door, because of the flames. He was able to ge the kids and two pets out the back door.

Fire investigators said the fire spread quickly, because the family's Christmas tree was near where the fire began. The Red Cross is reportedly helping the family with its immediate needs.
