Phoenix police searching for hit-and-run driver who killed bicyclist

-
Phoenix police have identified the victim of a deadly hit and run bicycle accident on Saturday morning.

Phoenix police are currently searching for the driver who hit and killed him.

Just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to the area near 27th Avenue and Bethany Home Road after someone hit a bicyclist, according to Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department.

Once on scene, officers found a 51-year-old man lying in the roadway.  He has been identified as Darryl Fitzgerald Summers.

Paramedics transported the man to the hospital in extremely critical condition, Holmes said.

We learned later in the morning that the man died as a result of his injuries.

According to a witness on scene, the victim’s bicycle was struck by a black/dark blue Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, single cab and with 20-24” chrome rims.

The witness also told police that the suspect fled the area southbound on North 27th Avenue after striking the victim.

After an initial investigation, police now believe the suspect vehicle is a 1999-2006, metallic black GMC Sierra pickup with 20-24 inch chrome rims, damage to the left front. They tell us the truck is likely missing the left front headlamp.

Police are asking anyone who may have information on this truck, based on the descriptions, or anyone who may have information concerning this investigation to call the Phoenix Police Violent Crimes Bureau at (602)262-6141 or Silent Witness at (480) W-I-T-N-E-S-S.
