LAVEEN, Ariz. (KSAZ)
Deputies are looking for a gunman who victims say was armed with an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. Eight people were shot when the shooter opened fire on a group celebrating the 4th of July outside their home.
Two adults were killed, and six were wounded. Of the six, three were teenagers and the youngest victim is just 2-years-old. Deputies identified the two victims killed as 45-year-old Armando Cardona, and 35-year-old Naome Innis.
The victims say the shooter walked up to their celebration armed with a rifle and opened fire.
"They just walked up said something and just shot everybody," said James Newcomb.
13-year-old James Newcomb was among the eight people shot at the Southern Meadows Trailer Park.
"I didn't know I got shot at all," he said.
James says he got a glimpse of the rifle before he took off running for his life.
"Because he pointed for a minute and didn't shoot, trying to scare us or something, so were already running to get back... it's an AR-15, they shot like 30 bullets at us," said James.
His 15-year-old brother was shot twice in the arm and the leg.
A 2-year-old is among the survivors; witnesses say a toddler was shot in the arm. Three teenagers and two adults were also shot and survived. Two adults were killed. Neighbors say they mistook the loud bangs for celebratory fireworks.
"It sounded like it was the 4th of July shooting up in the air," said Braulio Arellano.
Several neighbors speculate the shooter is a kid with a weapon. They say a group of wanna-be gang members has been going around and confronting people in the area.
"They just got a bunch of little kids playing gang members and doing stupid things, and that's all it is. That just makes me angry, and I fear for their safety," said Arellano.
MCSO is releasing few details in the shooting. They say they don't have a complete description of the shooter only that it is a male and likely Hispanic or Caucasian.
