5th of July busy for animal control officers

- The offices at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control were packed Tuesday.

"Typically the day after the 4th of July is the busiest day of the year because of pets that have gotten out during the fireworks," said Melissa Gable.

Gable says on any given day they take in about 100 stray dogs, but on July 5, that number can double.

"We had some that dug out under a gate. When a dog hears those fireworks they don't care if they go over the fence, under the fence, they just want to get away once they get outside. They usually just bolt and take off," said Gable.

Ryan Gonzalez and his mom are hoping someone has brought in their missing pup.

"We had her since she was born and the house is very lonely without her, my sisters are sad," said Ryan Gonzalez.

"If you've lost a pet definitely come in as soon as possible and see if they're here, if they're not here today that doesn't mean they won't come in tomorrow or the next couple of days," said Gable.
