TEMPE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A 16-year-old teen died after she was shot in the face by her brother-in-law in what police say appears to be an accident.
Tempe police say the teen was shot in the face by 23-year-old Emmanuel Hilerio inside an apartment near Rural and University at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday night.
Investigators say the gun went off while the teen and Hilerio were handling it. When Hilerio tried to take the gun from the teen, it accidentally fired.
The teen was rushed to a nearby hospital where she later died.
"There were other people in the house, other family members, the information I have so far is they didn't witness it, they were in other rooms," Sgt. Damen Despain said. "Everybody says there was no arguing, wasn't any kind of altercation, there appears to be some kind of accident."
Hilerio faces manslaughter charges.
