Suspect identified after deadly officer-involved shooting

- Police have identified a suspect who was killed in an officer-involved shooting in the west Valley.

The shooting happened near Thomas and 58th Avenue, reportedly at about 3 a.m Saturday morning.  Officers responded to a domestic situation at an apartment complex, after a friend of the victim received a text that an armed, unknown subject was in the home.  Police later identified the subject as 25-year-old Angel Torres, Jr.

When police arrived at the door, the 25-year-old subject was in the hallway was pointing a weapon at police.  A lieutenant who has been with the department for 21 years opened fire on the man, and he was shot and killed.

Police said that Torres was shot and killed after he pointed a gun at an officer. The weapon turned out to be a black replica BB gun.

They say he was at the apartment of a woman who he had been romantically involved with.

"The person inside the apartment was able to give word to a family member that there was a subject inside. He was known to her, believed to be on drugs, believed to be armed," said Sergeant Vince Lewis of Phoenix Police.

When officers arrived, the woman who lived in the apartment answered the door and the man who wasn't supposed to be there was in the hallway.

"The suspect presented a gun, pointed it at the officers and one of the officers fired on the suspect, ending the threat."

Police say the 25-year-old who was shot and killed had left some of his things at the apartment a few days earlier.

"The unpredictability of human behavior when we're talking about impairment is definitely something we consider. We do the best we can to approach safely, taking victims and bystanders safety into account before our own, but of course taking into account the unpredictability of the suspects so those are things that are going to be on our minds."

The woman's two small children were also in the apartment at the time of the shooting. No one else was hurt.

They say no officers were injured.  Police closed off the area surrounding the apartment complex and a nearby Chase bank during the incident.  Several units at the apartment complex were also evacuated.

Officers are now investigating what led up to the deadly officer-involved shooting.
