Officer spots his stolen ATV while on patrol

Scottsdale police officer catches crook who stole an ATV from him less than 24 hours before.
-
A prime example of "instant karma" after a Scottsdale police officer finds himself the victim of a property crime.

Someone stole this officer's new ATV over the weekend but the thieves did not get away with it for very long.

And the person who caught them was the very officer they stole from.

It was not a good way for Scottsdale Police Officer Dustin Friesth to start his week. His brand new ATV stolen from his home overnight Sunday.

"Next morning I woke up, and it wasn't there. So it was kinda weird being on the other side of law enforcement having to make a report of my property that was taken."

Officer Friesth was out on patrol that night when something caught his eye near Scottsdale Road and Shea: an ATV swerving in and out of traffic.

"And driving behind the four-wheeler I noticed the front half of the four-wheeler which was still kind of intact, was still kind of orange and I thought to myself, this can't be happening to me."

"Once I ran the VIN to the four-wheeler dispatch had confirmed that it was stolen out of Phoenix and in fact the registered owner was myself."

The officer's body camera recorded as he detained the man driving the ATV and his female passengers.

"It's kind of a one-in-a-million chance that I was able to recover my four-wheeler that was stolen from me."

Jose Rivera, 27 years old, was arrested for stealing the ATV and is facing felony charges for possession of stolen property and drug paraphernalia.

The ATV had about 70 miles put on it after it was taken and a lot of the parts were removed, most likely to sell online.

Officer Friesth says he is happy the ordeal came to this surprising end.

The suspect who was arrested admitted to the police that he had smoked meth shortly before he was arrested.

Officer Friesth says his ATV has several thousands of dollars in damage but he says he is relieved this case is closed.
