An ASU alum and military veteran opened a rock climbing gym in Phoenix in hope that it will help others cope with stress and get fit.
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -
The Black Rock Bouldering Gym is now open.
The owner, an ASU graduate and veteran says while this gym is for people of all ages to have fun and learn how to climb, for him, climbing has a deeper meaning.
It's a physical and mental challenge that inspired owner Chris Dodge to open the Black Rock Bouldering Gym. Dodge an ASU grad spent several years in the US Army, even serving in Iraq.
He says rock climbing was always his escape.
"This is a great stress reliever. You can only really focus on what's right in front of you. If you think about anything else, you're not paying attention to your hands, you're not paying attention to your feet and you inevitably fall. So there's a direct consequence for not being in the moment and I think that's what a lot of people are attracted to."
The official grand opening will be held at the Black Rock Bouldering Gym near 32nd street and Shea on Saturday from 10 to 7pm. There will be food, a live band, and of course a lot of rock climbing.
