PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Seven hundred children at Capitol School in downtown Phoenix make their way, group by group, into a classroom turned toy shop.
"It makes our Christmas season, it starts everything and just seeing the joy on the kids' faces is wonderful," Santa said.
It's a gift just for them and a surprise every time.
Anything that needs to be assembled is all handled by Cox Communications employees. In fact, this whole event is thanks to them and it's something they do every year.
"Twenty-one years ago, we had an employee at Cox Communications that knew about the Capitol Elementary School and knew about the difficult time they were having, making sure that all the kids here were going to have a Christmas; so she wanted," said Susan Anable, vice president of public affairs for Cox Communications. "She went to her fellow employees and said, "We need to do something for these kids.'"
For their 20th anniversary last year, every kid got a bike and this year is special, too; with toys, dolls and more. For many, this may be the only gift they get over the holidays, but they're always grateful and smiling as they relish the excitement of the day.
While all of that is going on inside, take a look at what's going on outside! A group of kids are waiting to get their presents, but they have plenty of entertainment to keep them occupied.
When they step through the doors, they experience the same shock and genuine happiness of every group.
It's a day they'll never forget.
