Pastor calls 10 flash flood victims hardworking

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (AP) - As "Ave Maria" played, more than 1,000 people said goodbye to 10 members of an extended family who died in a flash flood in Arizona.

The 10 white caskets were arranged in two rows facing the altar for a funeral Mass celebrated in English and Spanish on Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Scottsdale.

The Rev. Eric Tellez remembered the three generations of a Mexican immigrant family as hardworking people, many of whom worked in the restaurant industry. The pastor likened feeding people to a ministry.

He gave a message of Christian hope of resurrection and eternal life.

The family died when a torrent of water rushed through the swimming hole where they were celebrating a birthday on July 15, taking a grandmother, aunts and uncles, children and grandchildren.
