Yavapai County Sheriff's Office release video of officer involved shooting in Chino Valley

Officials with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office have released body camera footage of an officer involved shooting in Chino Valley that ultimately resulted in the suspect's death.

According to a statement provided by Sheriff's Office officials on Friday, the suspect, identified by officials as 70-year-old Martin Louis Avena from Paulden, died at a Phoenix area hospital during the evening of July 24. The shooting happened at around 2:30 p.m. on July 21, in the 400 block of Palomino Road in Chino Valley.

At the time, Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies, with help from police officers with Chino Valley Police, encountered Avena, who was armed. Avena, according to the statement, was being sought by deputies regarding a domestic violence incident that occurred earlier in the Paulden area, where Avena allegedly attacked his wife.

Avena, according to the statement, was later stopped by authorities, and he allegedly confronted the deputies and officers with a firearm, and was shot as a result. Avena was reportedly taken to the Yavapai County Regional Medical Center in Prescott first, and then flown to a Phoenix area hospital, in critical condition.

The law enforcement officers involved in the shooting were identified on July 24 as YCSO Deputy Theresa Kennedy, 52, and Chino Valley Police Officer Jeffrey Pizzi, 43. Kennedy, according to the statement, is a 24-year veteran with the Sheriff's Office, while Pizzi is an 18-year law enforcement veteran, and has worked with Chino Valley Police Department in the past four years.
