According to Mesa police, a natural gas regulator was being serviced when it exploded early Wednesday morning.
Ryan Smith, a spokesman with Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, says the explosion happened at a building that is not affiliated with the airport, but is on airport property.
The Associated Press, citing Deputy Fire Chief Forrest Smith, is reporting the incident did not significantly impact airport operations, although one departing aircraft was paused briefly, after the crew and passengers felt a tremor from the blast.
